The rapid urban expansion in China has led to extensive land occupation, resulting in the abandonment or inefficient use of numerous plots. Surveys reveal that 5% of urban allocation in China remains idle, while 40% is utilized ineffectively. This mismanagement of construction space presents a significant challenge that requires immediate attention. In the pursuit of optimal land use, Chongqing has embraced an innovative approach by repurposing urban "corners" to develop community-oriented sports and culture parks.

As of 2021, Chongqing has successfully established 92 community sports and cultural parks, integrating 1357 fitness venues and facilities, covering a lush green area of approximately 666,666.7 square meters. These parks collectively serve a population of around 3.5 million people across the city.

I am honored to have played a role in this remarkable initiative. From the initial site investigation to the project's completion, I contributed to the design of three parks and managed the oversight of seven. Particularly noteworthy is the Dashuijing sports and cultural park, for which I was responsible for design aspects. This park was showcased on China Central Television as a representative example among the 92 parks featured in the demonstration.

BEFORE AFTER

The 118-foot-tall mountain park features an ADA-accessible path loop—elderly visitors can reach both the mountaintop and the base without using stairs .

From the start of construction on October 1, 2018, to its completion on January 18, 2019, the park was the result of the dedicated efforts of countless individuals. The construction team worked tirelessly until 4 AM every day—even during rainy weather, when they had to repair damage caused by the rain. Ultimately, we delivered a high-quality park just in time for the 2019 Spring Festival, offering it as a meaningful gift to the citizens of Chongqing.
